Bono seems to defend Pop in this interview-did the unfinished excuse come later?

ill look up the link to the yt video but hes VERY confident about the album, but its already being mislabeled as U2-goes-techno and thats not fair etc.

but the American thing wasnt that america hated the album, it was just simply ignored. If you were around for NLOTH it was the same thing, only to a greater extent. By that i mean Bono critized the fans for not being 'hip enough' for Boots as the lead single and they distanced from the album as the tour went on. Popmart, the stage itself, couldnt be "distanced from" in terms of dropping songs <minus the usual amount that get dropped successful album/tour or not>. After Popmart they didnt tie the production of the tour as tightly to the album so they could drop the new songs and it wouldnt be so obvious.

they are promoting as if the best thing they'd ever put out, did they really believe it was among their best work at the time? or was it merely their natural instinct to defend their their work and decisions regardless of how good they thought it was?

this interview makes me wonder if the album being 'unfinished' was a manufactured  excuse that came later on after U2 had seen the full scale of the critical backlash

Well at the time of release they were promoting the sale of the album so of course they're going to 'defend' it.  Subsequently I think they've disowned it because it was a relative commercial failure and they want to distance themselves from its sound and want people to view it as an experimental aberration.  It is such a shame because playing songs from the album would still sound great today as evidenced by the clip of Mofo at a 2015 soundcheck that riffraff graciously posted.

This post just nails it!
What are we going to do now it's all been said.
No new ideas in the house and every book has been read.

I mean you have to experiment to get things right no shame in failing that’s where greatness comes from

You're goddamn right.

Except Pop wasn't a failure. Just unrecognized greatness.

I hated it when it came out but it’s much better today.  And I think it influenced music of the time and even still today

I had zero problem with Pop. AB, I had to get used to, but Pop? Nope, was just the next great U2 album.

I didn't even know it got bad reception until 2017. I did not have access to U2 information, so unless the nightly news anchor mentioned them (which did happen once, sigh), all I knew was contained in a single, rainbow CD.

So I went to the Pop tour in Atlanta and I don’t remember it, bad choices for a college student lol so I didn’t totally dislike it but phew part of it may have been the time in my life too

Pop was the album that got me hardcore into U2. When i got deep into the back catalog, b-sides, bootlegs i kinda forgot about it. No lost love just overwhelmed by the greatness i was experiencing with the previous albums.

5:30. He gets defensive about it.

Is it just me or did Bono seem to age rapidly between zootv and popmart?
