Joy Division
« on: January 25, 2019, 09:52:05 AM »
Over the last week (mainly due to a mention of Martin Hannett on here) I have been diving headlong back into this bands work.

I was obsessed with 'Closer' when i was about 15/16 (although i never really bothered with New Order)

Anyway I hadn't listened to either of their albums in full in years, but this week I have had Closer on heavy rotation and fucking hell does it still hit home like the most incredible gut punch.....you can feel Curtis' pain, you can reach out and smell the atmosphere created of unease and anxiety.

And fucking hell those last two tracks just leave me shaking they are so bleak, so chilling but so, so, so beautiful.

I hadn't forgotten how incredible an album it was but i think as a much older man, and shall we say a much more experienced man the record hits with an even deeper punch.

Any fans here?

Love Joy Division.  I still believe this is who U2 were trying to be when they started out.

Love JD. Wasn't the same after Curtis died.

Atmosphere was a masterpiece, especially the enigmatic video.

I can't see that myself - JD were much, much darker and also much much more electronically/synth inclined (certainly on Closer)

Also and here is the paradox about them they were much more dance beat infused!

Just look at the dance/synth ouput later on with New Order. Amazing stuff IMHO.

I love me a bit of JD. I reckon some early Simple Minds sounds a bit Joy Division-ish

 8)

I think it came out pre Thrillho!!

Sign we are getting old when we are talking about records 40 years old.

I always frame these things by thinkinh about being a kid in the 70's/80's and the music of 40 years ago then would be from the 30's and 40's - which just seems a different world!
