Sprachen Sie Deutsch?

Lemons and angels and crashed cars and E.U. Flags and Johnny cash and Batman and Frank Sinatra and MacPhisto.

A step back from the greatness of AB? Or a masterpiece?

My Euros, Pounds and Swiss Francs are on masterpiece. Dream out loud baby!

Pound for pound it's not as good as AB or Pop, but it does have two of my favorite U2 songs ever (the title track and Stay). It ranks as #4 for me, a brilliant album, not to mention the "grand madness" that was the entire Zoo era.
Listen as Hope and Peace try to rhyme,
Listen over marching bands playing out their time.

Zooropa isn't as consistently good as Pop, but Zooropa reaches heights that Pop doesn't quite manage IMHO.  I'm thinking Stay, Zooropa and Dirty Day here.  Now if the single (strings) version of Please had been on the album it would be a different story.

I think Zooropa was a pretty good follow-up to AB, but definitely not as good as AB.  It's in my top 5 U2 albums (JT, AB, UF, Zooropa, Boy).
I feel my luck could change.

I met U2 a lot on the Zoo TV tour. Some pretty memorable occasions too. After one of the Wembley Zooropa shows, we met them outside the stadium, about an hour after the show. We sat outside, with about 10-20 other fans, and chatted with them and drank Jack Daniels - I had a bottle and Bono drank (a loot) of it. Edge went back inside and came back out with an acoustic guitar, and we all sat on the steps and sang Some Days Are Better Than Others, and Edge challenged us to sing Numb - we made a valiant effort, but he had to take over!. A quite memorable occasion.

Great story! Why don't U2 lighten up and release a drunk EP or something?

Regarding Zooropa, this album has to be my number three. Not as legendary as Achtung Baby or Pop, but a mostly consistent and highly-concentrated effort. U2 really showcase their genre-bending skills here (even incorporating some country influence into the album with The Wanderer). The title track and Dirty Day are probably my favorites.

I agree that "Zooropa" is a great track and sounds fresh even today.  Not my favorite album, but it definitely has some memorable moments.

Zooropa was ahead of its time. The title track is great. Stay is an absolutely beautiful song. I also really like Lemon and Dirty Day.

A slight step back from AB, sure...but that's just because AB was the band's second masterpiece.

I find The Wanderer totally underrated - a great song and always great to see U2 collaborating with someone totally different
