Arcade Fire
« on: October 30, 2017, 07:31:24 AM »
I am curious about this band - I haven't truly listened to much of their work aside from some of their bigger songs.

They were just in town the other night and played the Independence Events Center - which seats about 5,000.  Add another 1000 floor GA spots and it still seems like a really small venue for a band this size.

They also played the Twin Cities and pulled and attendance of 5k in a hockey arena that seats 16k.

Has this band lost steam?

Funeral and Neon Bible are phenomenal. The Suburbs is bloated but has some great moments and Reflektor is where the band really started to lose me. Their first two albums are definitely the place to start.

First two proper albums are indeed great as mentioned. They started out as a hippie/hipster outfit with arena alt-rock vibe, then went Springsteen on Neon Bible (their most accessible record I think). I never listened to the Suburbs in full, but I actually liked Reflektor a lot. They went from U2-Springsteen musical stylings to Talking Heads, and it worked. I haven't heard the new album yet, but the disco/electronic first single was a bit too on the nose, too calculated.

Anyone care to compare their new album to the old ones?

I've really enjoyed the new album, don't understand the flak it is getting. Sure it's not Funeral, but it's damn good. I've liked the gigs I saw them at, but never felt they were as epic live as I had been told. I'm going seeing them in their own gig next year though(rather than a festival), so hope to be wowed then!

Granted, I'm a little bit chauvinistic about my hometown band, but they just released a short film/music video and I think it's pretty damn good.

Sure, some people will say they're insufferable, pompous and all that (which may be a little true) but I say kudos to a band that tries to push and reinvent itself.

If they come by your town this spring and summer, go see them. Amazing show.

I've seen them and thought they were terrific live.  Would see them again for sure. Haven't heard the new album front to back but didn't care for their SNL appearance this week.

Loved Funeral and Neon Bible, especially Neon Bible. Wasn't one way or the other with Suburbs.

Tried to get through Reflektor and couldn't do it.

I find Win Butler to be a pompous, pretentious, condescending ass in interviews and such - whether that's fair or not. It's a turn-off.

I saw Gloria live. Even if I never see the band live again, at least I saw Gloria live. :)

I must be the only person alive who couldn't tell you the name of an AF song.  Sure i would recognize a few, but for how often i hear then get talked about, still feel like i shouldn't be tis in the dark if they were actually that good.  I'd rather listen to The Vaccines or The 1975.

Still adore those first 2 albums...and I've warmed up to the new one enough to consider going to see them - they're in town the 1st Saturday in July. Bent Knee's here a week later, though, and if I can only see one of the two shows, it's going to be theirs.
