Is Pop a good album?
« on: December 19, 2018, 02:14:24 AM »
I'm been a fan for about a year, and I've recently been discovering more of the band's nineties material. One thing I've noticed from articles is that Pop was widely criticized and panned by the public and critics and the band came out and said it was rushed and they needed an extra 4 months to finish the album properly. Also judging by comments over the years it seems like the band view the album as a complete failure and they don't seem to acknowledge very often, even with the recent 20 year anniversary of Pop last year,

what is your personal opinion on the album?

It's an unbelievable album. So, so good. For me, their best.

Lyrically Bono is on fire, they are full of confidence from ZooTV and it shows - they aren't afraid to take risks and it makes for some brilliant music.

i think Pop is a good album.  Not great and it was a disappointment.  i don't think a few more weeks or months would have made much of a difference. a lot of people on here, including me, think the band takes too much time trying to fine tune albums and would be better served to go with the rawer sound.  in this case people tend to think the opposite.  none of the later remixes blew my mind.  the album was always going to be what it was and nothing was ever going to touch AB status.

It has been posted many times - mostly by me!!

I love it - wish they had pushed further in that direction...

The Mofo on that video is IMO the greatest bit of recorded u2 available anywhere ever - that is how much I love it....I would love to have heard that version in full.

The I'm not your baby snippet on the video is fucking awesome.

It makes me more "angry" that here we are now and these same men think that the fucking best thing about me is where it is at!!

The HK mixes video I posted suggests that maybe they over worked it as opposed to not finishing it....

I think it's one of their poorer efforts. For me, there are some real highlights: If God Will Send His Angels, Gone, Please, and maybe Wake Up Dead Mean. I think If You Wear that Velvet Dress is a cool mood piece and I can get into Last Night On Earth now and again.

However, there is a lot of drek on this album IMO. I'm definitely in the minority on this board in that I find Mofo absolutely unlistenable. I could care less about Discotheque, which I feel is the 90s equivalent of Get on Yer Boots. Miami, Playboy Mansion, and Staring at the Sun are pretty bad IMO. The album is half-redeemed by a good closer in Wake Up Dead Man.

In addition to a collection of half-good songs, it lacks focus, feels unfinished, and also feels like they took everything cool about Zooropa to uncool levels. There's a fine line between irony and goofiness. The tour was disasterous in the states, and they band still did not know why they did the tour announcement in a flippin' K-Mart. Like, if you are trying to make a statement about commercialism and the modern disposables of art - then make it. But they hedged on a bunch of reporter questions and played one of their worst live performances this side of Womanfish.

All in all..album and tour - glorious ideas that resulted in a half baked effort. More hype than good. An idea taken too far. It wasn't received well in the States...it was just a mess. Aside from about 3-4 songs it's an era of U2 I prefer to forget.

I will concede the album artwork is fantastic.
My U2 Top 10: The Unforgettable Fire, Acrobat, New Year's Day, Gloria, The Fly, A Sort of Homecoming, Where The Streets Have No Name, Bad, Ultra Violet (Light My Way), Drowning Man

All about opinions and we all hold differing ones and that is cool....BUT one thing i always like to question is this 'unfinished' label that people like to throw at it....

My question is this: Do people really think this or is it just because Bono said it....? It fascinates me as I don't recall hearing it until after Bono came out with it....
