Best Thing released too soon?
« on: October 30, 2017, 05:13:34 AM »
I reckon Best Thing should have been released a couple weeks before SoE, not 2-3 months earlier. A couple months is too long a gap, and there's no momentum.

Anyone else? PS This isn't a "Best Thing is great/bad" thread, just talking about the timing of singles.
The Edge: “[Eno] would love to see us making albums a bit more like [Zooropa]. Where we go, ‘You know what? We’re not going to second-guess any of this. Let’s just go for it.’”

U2 Fans: We'd all love to see that, Edge.

I think you're right.

Not to talk about what I exactly think about The Best Thing  ;), but I think the timing would have been better to release the single (without leak) after the release of the album. The Best Thing could have been a surprise when it's first listen was in the context of the album.

I'm sure they will release another single before the new album,  They've made a video for it so it can't be long

I don't think so ... I think it's just a starting pistol for the promo. There's some big hitters releasing albums right now in the U.K. Liam Gallagher/Noel Gallagher/Beck/Bjork/Morrisey for example and would all be cover stars in music magazines and talk/music shows. U2 for this period haven't been in the same hemisphere and can't compete as much so to start the promo for the album with a soft approach while they finish the JT tour will eventually build up to some big hype.

The Blackout is now getting some press with the RSD release and it appears they're working on a video for GOOYOW which I think we will see by this time next week.

This PR machine is about to get ramped up.

It seems they're taking the approach that many currents artists follow, which is releasing multiple songs and singles months in advance. Weezer released half of their new album before it came out and Beck began putting out songs from Colors over a year out.

If U2 releases at least one more song between now and December they should be able to keep the hype train rolling just long enough.

Yes it's not uncommon. Coldplay usually releases the single months before. It promotes the album. I do think releasing 2 singles is too much.

Yeah, i've said it a few times already, it's a bit weird the way they're releasing multiple songs so far in advance.  its not like they needed to keep momentum going on the JT tour.

I think a release date circa October 2175 would have worked perfectly for me.

Good points arguing for and against. Glad I'm not managing U2.

Between New Zooland and Edges Cat, I am most concerned with the fact that we have 2 forum members with a feline avatar.  This is highly disturbing.  And I love cats, FWIW.

I honestly thought New Zooland's pic was an Ewok from Star Wars.
