Which album post-POP do you like the most (or hate the less)?
« on: December 02, 2018, 09:08:40 AM »
It’s been a year since SOE was released, and the tour supporting it is now over. I guess it’s a good time to find out was is the favourite album post-POP in the forum.

Personally going with NLOTH, with SOI a close second.

Hmm....not sure...it's either Bomb or ATYCLB.  I love both and have listened to both recently,  so i'm going to have to think about it a bit.  :-\

SOI, didn't really doubt. It's amongst my most played albums, beside Pop, Boy and Joshua Tree

Went with SOI, mainly due to The Troubles, SLABT, TIWYCRMN, and Crystal Ballroom. And the usual offenders like Iris, Volcano, etc. don't really bother me. The only tracks I don't like are TMOJR and the album version of EBW. And also California and SOS, haha. Maybe this isn't my favorite after all?

No Line on the Horizon.

I don't like the inclusion of I'll Go Crazy and SUC, though I don't mind Boots being on it.  It would have made a better album had they simply put Winter and Soon on it in place of Crazy and SUC, and then rejigged the tracklisting.  Fez:BB is crying out to be this album's opener.  I find it easily their most interesting musically of all the post-Pop albums.  Cedars is magical and, being objective, MoS is quite possibly their best song since Pop.  I like all the little embellishments on this album such as the French horn on WaS, the cello on Breathe (a favourite self-affirmation song of mine), the male choir at the end of Winter, the church organ on UC and the Middle Eastern sounds on various tracks including Soon.  Drums are a little low key, though I think they were going for an Unforgettable Fire vibe, and I like The Edge's conventional guitar solos on this record.

Well put Dice. Except the Boots part.  ;)

Very telling that the men who made it distance themselves from it and call it 'too esoteric'

Clueless about their own art....it is easily their most interesting record post Pop even with the unholy trinity!

Take the shite off it and it could have been a good album.

Indeed.

There is a potentially decent album there - they couldn't resist ruining it with shite like crazy tonight and SUC of course but it sees them at their most interesting post Pop easily.

How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb

Not a popular choice, I realize that, but it's an album I still love and can go back to anytime. The only record I find truly mediocre is SOE, despite having some amazing songs on it.

I was torn between NLOTH and SoI. I went for SoI, as it has only one clunker.....NLOTH has the infamous 3.

If you had told me in 1997 that a day would come when we judge U2 albums by how many crap songs they don't have on them I would't've believed you.

the last 3 have each improved on the previous. the problem is they all have different levels of highs i guess, NLOTH and SOI having great second halves each and SOE having more consistency imo than SOI, despite retreading ground from SOI. AS is the only stinker imo from SOE.
