A beauty. I love its use in The Million Dollar Hotel. Shame about the rest of the film.

So good even my dad likes it.  I lent my dad my car and I must have had a self made U2 compilation in the CD player and when he returned the car he asks me what's that song called that goes 'he left by the back door and he through away the key'?

Lyrically, it's the Holy Trinity in three verses or at least that's what I always thought it was - need to get The Exile to confirm.

Yeah, that's how I've always understood it:

The Lover = The Holy Spirit
The Brother = Christ
The Father = God

Great chune.

The First Time' is a very special song. It just seemed right that in the middle of all the chaos and blinking lights of the futurescapes there would be a very simple, poetic moment. It's the story of the prodigal son but in it the prodigal son decides he doesn't want to return. It is about losing your faith. I haven't lost my faith but I'm very sympathetic to people who have the courage not to believe. I've seen a lot of people around me have bad experiences with religion, be so badly abused they feel they just can't go there any more, which is a shame.

Think of how much better Zooropa would have been if, right before they were going to release it, they decided to hire Alice In Chains’ producer to re-work it for five years.

It's a great tune. I was pleasantly surprised when the band included it on The Best of 1990-2000. Between that and finally playing it a few times on the Vertigo Tour, it seems the band has finally come around to seeing what a great piece of work it is.

Surprised it's loved. I thought it was a bit disliked. I really like the subtle piano kicking in.

Never thought of the Trinity in the verses. Thanks for that. I'll listen to it tomorrow  :)

I'm Christian myself, these songs, along with Drowning Man, and IGWSHA, wake up dead man (and also ISHFWILF, WOWY, WILATW, probably (eh.. for sure) more) the loosing the faith can really struck me.

I think it's one of the main reasons why I think U2 is sublime and maybe why I kept my faith. Bono is honest with his view on religion and his faith. There is room for doubt, even to turn your back against it, and still making songs like Gloria, Magnificent and Lights of home (partly).

It is a beautiful song, so very moving and soul stirring, perhaps the first darkness after sunset when the warmth on your skin turns cold but you wouldn't dare to go in because you can still see the glow on the horizon.  From one of the greatest albums ever made by any band,  Zooropa - that is,  it should be enough to fill the halls and raise the art stained walls to their finest peak during any communion.

And speaking of, how epic was the snippet during Bad at the Dublin ZooTV gig?
