When u2 released.....First up "Boy"

First of a new 'series'.....What were you up to/what was going on in your life when u2 released their albums - maybe certain albums soundtracked college, your transition to being a  teenager etc

First up is "Boy" ...
may as well start at the beginning.

I was an 8 year old kid who had absolutely no idea who u2 were and would not go on to discover them for a few more years yet....

What is your story from 1980!

Great idea! I was 8, and my younger brother had just been born. I was being pushed up a grade in school.

I was 4 and already way into U2, I traveled to NYC to see them in a small club The Edge signed my coloring book, Bono bought me a beer for my Tupperware sipy Cup.

Good times!

I was 7 years old, playing with Batman and Star Wars figures, and was 3 years away from my older brother buying Under A Blood Red Sky giving me my first exposure to the band.

At that age I was hearing a lot of the music my 3 older brothers liked. My oldest brother influenced us the most. His room was decorated like a lot of teenage boys in North America brought up in the ‘70’s. On one wall a Pink Floyd and Rush poster. On the other wall KISS and Aerosmith. And a full wall poster over his bed towering above them all was Led Zeppelin.

Love this idea! It might help to put the release date in the subject lines going forward (10.20.80, in this case).

I was a freshman in high school and was just discovering, through the cool big brother of a new friend, The Clash, Sex Pistols, Elvis Costello, etc. My world was totally turned upside down. I'd gone to a small Catholic grade school in Northern Kentucky and was the only kid that was really into music. My friends listened to Foghat, Kiss, and the like, and I didn't dig any of that. So discovering punk and new wave opened up a whole new world.

I didn't learn about U2 until the "Gloria" video, so that is still to come... ;-)

I looked like butter wouldn't melt in my mouth.  I was 7 and was well into my Usborne book of World Geography, which I'd received as a present some days earlier.
(reaches behind me to get it off the bookshelf)
It still has the note in it from my parents dated October 1980.  In fact it was more than Geography, it was social anthropology, economics and a bit of science - all for kids.

It must have helped my appreciation of Bono's comments on economic, health and social development statistics in Africa.
Page 101 of my book tells me (with illustrations for kids) that there were 516 people per doctor in WEST GERMANY and 44,382 people per doctor in CHAD.
That's some inequality.
The other statistic that shocked me back then was that in MONACO 84/100 people had a phone (remember this is the days before mobile phones) but in BANGLADESH only 1/1000 (a thousand!) had a phone.  That was probably the politicians and diplomatic staff....?
The stats came from the UN approx. 1976.  But as a child this book opened my eyes and I still keep it at home now.

Not heard of U2 though.  That was some years later.

I was 26 years old, living and working on the east coast, USA.  Work, party, sleep. Work, party sleep. It was a way of life. First heard Boy at a party, sometime in 1981. Heard Electric Co...that guitar solo, found the host of the party and asked who that was on the stereo. Went out and bought the album the next day. Fan from day one, never looked back.

Had just finished my first year in high-school (or 7th grade). Didn’t know of U2 at all. At that time, my favourites were the prog rock bands of the 70’s. Pink Floyd, Supertramp, Genesis, Yes, etc. Around that time I also started to explore the Stones and others from the 60’s. Also I was firmly againts disco and all other similar crap my sister was into.

Great subject btw an tha!
