Homes of the u2 albums
« on: June 24, 2018, 08:23:07 PM »
For no reason at all,  perhaps because i am bored,  i wonder what type of residence,  home, etc. would come to mind when thinking of a u2 album.  It could be a place you once lived while listening to a specific album,  it could be a place nearby,  or something entirely different.  Naturally i thought it would be fun to try and come up with something for their albums.

here are a couple:

Zooropa
Swallow's Nest Crimea

It's gothic,  dark,  mysterious,  and looks as if it could fall off the edge of the cliff at any moment.  A natural choice for me.   8)

POP
Versace Mansion

Miami....style....fashion....excess....etc   8)

Rattle & Hum
Graceland

self-explanatory,  i think.

Songs of Experience
Trump Tower

again...self explanatory

Good choices. Zooropa is probably the most "European" of all their albums so it has to have a European home....R & H by contrast is probably one of their most "American" albums, so Graceland seems the right home for it.

Achtung Baby - Berlin's red light district or Fez.
I love Rock N' Roll...so I booked a room at the heartbreak hotel and there, the music plays on and on.

I think the band made a terrific choice with the ruins of Moydrum Castle for TUF, it reflected the album’s mood perfectly.

But if I remember well they did have some copyright issues over that cover

I don't have a specific home, per se, but I do associate certain U2 albums with cities or memories that I have.

I always think of my trip to France when I hear TUF and I associate War with the day I spent at Normandy Beach, touring the old ruins and battle sites from D-Day. HTDAAB always reminds me of winter, especially Christmas of 2004. I was in my first year of college and working at Toys R Us on weekends, so that album became the soundtrack to those formative years. NLOTH is a beach album that makes me think of water, while ATYCLB is a summer album through and through. AB and Zooropa are very European and Pop is a summer vacation album. TJT always makes me think of winter 2001, which is when I first heard it. That was also the year Fellowship of the Ring came out, so I occasionally associate that album with Lord of the Rings. ;D

TUF does seem rather obvious.

ATYCLB
Slane Castle
I wasn't there but have watched it many times. The show was grand, emotional, and yes there is a castle looming in the background.  Can't imagine a more special setting than that.

NLOTH reminds me of the English North Sea coast.

We were still listening to the album in the car during the autumn of 2009, having seen the 360 show over the summer.

We spent a long weekend at the Suffolk coast and I do remember the view from one of the seaside towns reminded me of the bleak black and white cover.  So I came home having shot a load of holiday photos of a bleak grey Autumnal horizon of sea and sky.
(there were other more interesting photos of better views and places as well as the people I was on holiday with!).
One love, One blood, One life;
You got to do what you should.
One life; With each other
Sisters, Brothers
One life; But we're not the same
We get to carry each other, Carry each other

For me i tend to think of where the albums were made or some place tied to the produciton somehow.
Boy and October I just think of Dublin
War- Sweden's snowy forests for the NYD video (copied later byt he Swedish band The Shout Out Louds)
TUF- the castle where they recorded the album as featured in the documentary
TJT- the SW desert of the US
R&H- Arizona
AB- Berlin
Zooropa- Berlin again
Pop- Berlin yet again, or any European big city
ATYCLB- an airport somewhere in Europe
HTDAAB- Dublin or specifically the opera house
No Line- Morocco
SOI- Ireland
SOE- The US because unfortunately of how much of the album is a response to Trump and a love song to the states/democracy

NLOTH still paints the worst picture for me.  That album cover is unfortunately accurate for such a depressing album.

No Line- Morocco

And yet they failed to put a fatwa on Bono because of tracks 5-6-7
