Wha' happened?

Remember this quote from the Grammy's when accepting for Zooropa, Bono says,

"I think I'd like to give a message to the young people of America. And that is: We shall continue to abuse our position and f**k up the mainstream."

Wha' happened between then and now.  To be clear, there is a lot of their music I very much enjoy made since then and of course POP came out after this, but I would venture since POP, many agree the F'ing up of the mainstream has gone by the wayside.

Yeah, they may have jumped INTO the stream a bit. But, we're still here, aren't we? ha

I think many of us got caught in their current, which I'm mostly ok with but for the occasional low water.   :)

I think what he meant to say was that they would f@#k up by trying to be mainstream.

The important piece here is to define “our position”. Pop did not go over well. In fact, I’m hard pressed to find many outside these forums that remember it. And that “position” was the biggest band in the world. Well, Pop kinda ruined that here in America. I saw Pop tour in Minneapolis and I was one of only a few in the upper level. It was a dramatic collapse from Achtung Baby. My wife and I watched bits of all their live DVDs the other day and Pop was the one where she said just didn’t connect emotionally. That’s why “all that you can’t...” was a back to basics. It’s tough to abuse a position you no longer hold. Lastly, I am the father of teenagers and that kind of cynical talk does not hold water with the younger generation.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy Pop but today a more sincere approach is much more well received than cynicism and irony. Their advocacy plays an important role and cannot be confusing.

That's a reasonable view to take.  I guess I had not thought of it in that way, I attached the comment more toward mainstream music so to speak and not so much to social or political issues.

Thing is I don't believe U2 are mainstream anymore outside of Rolling Stone, Q, and Mojo.

Recently NME published a list of 10 anticipated albums still to be released this year. They listed Bjork, Beck, Kurt Vile + Courtney Barnett, Taylor Swift, and some others I can't remember but there was no U2 in that list.

I can see that too.

Musically they are not 'mainstream' this side of the pond.  That goes to Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Foo Fighters etc.  I quite like it that way.

Politically - loads of artists are jumping on the anti-Trump bandwagon and they are not all American.  Over here, the majority of the people don't like Trump (even if just over half of them like Brexit).  I went to a festival over the summer (one that U2 have some historic links to) and it was mainly anti-Trump rhetoric from many angles and not too much pro-Corbyn (there was a sizeable Green showing including Natalie Bennett their previous leader).
So in answer to the question - they are politically mainstream.
One love, One blood, One life;
You got to do what you should.
One life; With each other
Sisters, Brothers
One life; But we're not the same
We get to carry each other, Carry each other

i disagree with this.  The band is taking the exact same stance on Trump as every other musician out there.  That's not F'ing up the mainstream but giving the message people expect you to give.

Bono was mad because earlier in the show they had cut Frank Sinatra's speech and judging by his moves he already had a drink or two.
I don't think that statement was supposed to be taken 100% seriously.

He was so f****n cool back then, swag and sass for days. What a great decade.
