Favorite Lyric?
« on: October 14, 2017, 02:48:00 PM »
One of the big things that drew me to U2 was Bono's lyrics. Some of my favorites:

"Sweet the sin
Bitter taste in my mouth
I see seven towers
But I only see one way out

You got to cry without weeping
Talk without speaking
Scream without raising your voice"

“Don’t worry, baby
It’s gonna be alright
Uncertainty can be a guiding light"

“I’ll see you again
when the stars fall from the sky
And the moon has turned red
Over one tree hill
we run like a river"

"Red lights, gray morning
You stumble out of a hole in the ground
A vampire or a victim
It depends on who's around"

There's a lot of other lyrics I could list but those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.  :) How about yours?

There are SO many, but the one that pops up first and foremost in my mind is
"I have a will for survival".
U2 music has helped me with that will.

Yes, it's a strange lyric that.  The narrator is expressing how he (or possibly she) has been hurt over and inviting the infliction of more pain, but s/he nevertheless has a will for survival through that world of pain.  I am not sure all of us can always and at all times bear that pain, and the will can become weak.  The Troubles is the most interesting lyric on SOI for me.

Yes, the entire song moves me...the alternate version is even better, in my opinion. It's a song that helps a person find their inner strength.

At first I hated the song. The way it was sung, the chorus. But when I realised that sentence it broke my heart. I went to explore the song and it turns out to be one of my favorites. Live it was amazing, I wanted them to play it again.

This tour has done great things for The Joshua Tree. It made from a album which was good, but found nothing special, a great and emotional album.

"Jesus
Were you just around the corner?
Did you think to try and warn her?
Or are you working on something new?
If there's and order
In all of this disorder
Is it like a tape recorder?
Can we rewind it just once more"

In first instance I thought it was a simple/bad verse. Just a few words putting together and sounds nice (easy rhyming).

I don't know the meaning of it exactly (lack of English I guess). But for me it feels like something is happening to someone. God's just watching and it feels like he don't even want to try to make it alright: he's has changed his mind. You could pray whatever you want how crazy you mind could be. Your prayers and bad events seems to be repeating and it won't be finished.

This feeling was exactly the way I felt once. This song didn't give me answer but it expressed me 100%, which gave me the opportunity to close a bad case.

It makes me think of the line from Hawkmoon..."like faith needs a doubt".

Pretty right. But it's a pretty dark lyric. And just satisfied the doubt, sort of.

Mother - am I still your son?
You know I've waited for so long to hear you say so
Mother - you left and made me someone
Now I'm still a child, but no one tells me no

^ that right there is the pinnacle of their lyrical output.

There are very many I like.  Please is brilliant, especially:

September, streets capsizing
Spilling over down the drains
Shard of glass, splinters like rain
But you could only feel your own pain.

One of the less well-known ones I like is North and South of the River - beautiful song:

I want to reach out over the lough
And feel your hand across the water
Walk with you along an unapproved road
Not looking over my shoulder

I want to see, and I want to hear
To understand your fears
But we're north and south of the river

I've been doing it wrong all of my life
This holy town has turned me over
A young man running from what he didn't understand
But the wind from the lough just got colder and colder

There was a badness that had it's way
Love was not lost, love will have it's day
North and south of the river

Can we stop playing these old tattoos ?
Darling, I don't have the answer
I want to meet you
Where you are
I don't need you to surrender
There's no feeling that's so alone
As when the one you're hurting is your own
North and south of the river

Some high ground is not worth taking
Some connections are not worth making
There's an old church bell no longer ringing
Some old songs are not worth bringing
North and south of the river

Quote from: Mofo
Holy dunc spacejunk comin' in for the splash
White dopes on punk staring into the flash
Lookin' for baby Jesus under the trash
...
Lookin' for a sound that's gonna drown out the world
Lookin' for the father of my two little girls
Got the swing got the sway got my straw in lemonade
Still looking for the face I had before the world was made

Quote from: The Fly
It's no secret that the stars are falling from the sky
It's no secret that our world is in darkness tonight
They say the sun is sometimes eclipsed by a moon
You know I don't see you when she walks in the room

It's no secret that a friend is someone who lets you help
It's no secret that a liar won't believe anyone else
They say a secret is something you tell one other person
So I'm telling you, child
...
It's no secret that a conscience can sometimes be a pest
It's no secret ambition bites the nails of success
Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief
All kill their inspiration and sing about their grief

Quote from: Acrobat
Don't believe what you hear
Don't believe what you see
If you just close your eyes
You can feel the enemy
When I first met you girl
You had fire in your soul
What happened your face of melting in snow?
Now it looks like this
...
No, nothing makes sense
Nothing seems to fit
I know you'd hit out
If you only knew who to hit
And I'd join the movement
If there was one I could believe in
Yeah I'd break bread and wine
If there was a church I could receive in
'Cause I need it now
To take the cup
To fill it up
To drink it slow
I can't let you go
I must be an acrobat
To talk like this
And act like that

Quote from: Until The End Of The World
I took the money
I spiked your drink
You miss too much these days if you stop to think
You lead me on with those innocent eyes
You know I love the element of surprise
In the garden I was playing the tart
I kissed your lips and broke your heart
You
You were acting like it was the end of the world

God damn is Mofo one of the most unique and amazing things they ever did.

Awesome techno rock with some amazing lyrics about Bono's mother.
