10. Their best pop song. They shouldn't feel that they have to prove themselves in writing one anymore.

I saw Gloria live. Even if I never see the band live again, at least I saw Gloria live. :)

Stone cold 10.

The one thing U2 lacks is that one song that is so well known across all boundaries of taste that it identifies them. Born in the USA. Thriller. Stairway to heaven. Bohemian rhapsody.

WOWY is the closest they ever came

Ok it has been done to death but these threads aren't about that are they - they are about the song as as a stand alone piece in their original state.

(Well for me anyway)

This was like nothing else at the time that was charting and u2 have rarely had a better hit single since.

A massive top 10 hit with no chorus and no cheesy attempts at relevance - just a great song from the gut....modern u2 could learn from young u2 here!

10/10 One of the very best. There's a reason they always play it.

I know I'm in the minority on this one.  When it first came out, it was really the only song on JT I did not enjoy, I felt it was a title too smarmy and wimpy so it never realy took.  Oddly, I enjoy much more its counterpart AIWIY.

Anyway, it has grown a bit on me over the years and I can see beyond what I first thought of it.  Still not a big favorite of mine, but did give it an 8.

Very good... and far and away the band's greatest pop song. U2 does pop music best when its poppiness is unintentional.

Unique. Timeless. A masterpiece.

Love the Popmart Mexico version on video. Gives me chills every time I watch it.

Well, not much to say other than it’s the song that every pop rock band has tried to rip-off once.

The influence and impact it has had on pop music is incalculable.

The fact that it came out amid the bombastic plastic 80’s music scene, makes it even more noteworthy.

Dark. Haunting. One of the boldest love songs ever written.

I can't pretend I listen to this song much anymore, but when it came out in 1987 it was a great leap forward in their songwriting.  It is a classic song, and deserves a 10.

God didn't just walk through the room,  he sat down and listened to the recording,  then stood up and applauded once it was finished.
