What is your favorite colloquialism used in a U2 Song
« on: October 19, 2017, 01:50:16 PM »
What's your favorite?

What region are you from if it's familiar to you?

If you've heard it elsewhere, other than in that region, where was it?

My favorite is "She's slippy, you're sliding down." from Mysterious Ways.

I'm originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Mysterious Ways first got me into U2 back when I was a 15 year old dork, and when I heard them use the term "slippy," I felt they knew where I was coming from. :)

If you've heard it elsewhere, other than in that region ("Born Slippy" by Underworld doesn't count) where was that?
I saw Gloria live. Even if I never see the band live again, at least I saw Gloria live. :)

Hmmm as an Irish person I suppose I will see more than most.....

"Seven towers" from RTSS is a Dubliners reference to ballymun
Bloody is a more aggressive term in Ireland than anywhere else.....in this songs context, it's actually like a swear word. Almost like saying "f@&$ing Sunday" even though it's a reference to Bloody Sunday in 1971. If an Irish child said bloody, in the 80s,  they'd be told to wash their mouth out with soap and water

I like "the dog in the street" who "knows we're in love with defeat".  That's quite a philosophical canine :o

woof...being a dog-sitter, I can vouch for dogs...they DO think about things...probably more than some humans that I know.

My fav dog thing...when they follow you into the bathroom, and you're sitting there...are they thinking "man, you're gonna get in a lot of trouble for doing that in the house"?

#6 and #8 are especially true.
This (in my experience) also applies to small children for some reason. Haha

Dogs are so much easier to get along with than people.  So loving and uncomplicated!

"I've been sleeping in the street again, like a stray dog"

Yes. Even the many rescues that I watch, with all of their assorted issues, give more love than I could ever deserve...and I'm just their "nanny"!
