Van Halen

Was thinking just yesterday, there have been countless debates on DLR-VH vs SH-VH, but what I have rarely if ever seen is he change in guitar sound from Eddie between the two eras.

With DLR, his sound was much more raw, seemed lower in tone either due to production, tuning or playing.  However, with SH, it seemed to get more twangy, trebley and more slick in production.

I much prefer the DRL guitar sound, one of the other reasons I prefer DLR VH, not just DLR as a singer, but the sound of the band and Eddie's guitar in particular.

Anyone else have thoughts on Eddie with DRL vs SH?

I prefer SH.  Superior vocalist. Clean sound on guitar. I always felt like DLR was one step away from yelling Yabba Dabba Doo on stage

So if we are strictly debating the guitar sound change, you prefer the SH-VH guitar sound.  That's cool.  There is no disputing Eddie's continued virtuosity regardless of the timber.

Eddie was/is awesome. I saw Sammy down in Cabo San Lucas years ago (with Jason Bonham on drums!) and he rocked that place! That's all I know. ;)

i'm bored with the Van Hagar defense. Diamond Dave brought the personality and lyrics i want out of VH, Hagar's stuff was okay but it was to ballad/Journeyesque for my tastes. I could care less if he's the better singer.

I like both eras, but the original 4 had the swagger, which was lost when Sammy joined. It wasn't all Sammy's fault as they were trending this way. It was the mid 80's, the time of slick production and Eddie was experimenting more with keyboards then the guitar by then.

The Roth era was where they exploded and became huge, a ton of great songs, and it is the era they will be remembered for.

He should have never bought that chorus pedal for the Diver Down sessions. His tone was never the same once he started using it,
or the Harmonizer he used to duplicate it from OU812 onwards.
