A recent share of the Jesus and Mary Chain song reminded me of this idea for a poll. Their Just Like Honey stands alongside The Cure's Just Like Heaven as a huge commercial success which too survived the passing of time. Both tracks sound ageless in spite of their popularity and consistent use as genre spokesmen: one defines a shoegaze-pop melding later refined by bands like Ride, and the other is a quintessential new wave pop staple.
Which do you prefer? I'm tempted to give my vote to Just Like Honey. I first heard the song at the end of Lost in Translation, and if you've seen the film, you can imagine how that track might make someone feel had they never listened to it before.
But "Heaven" is a masterpiece of pop songwriting, with its phenomenal sonic details and layered instrumentation, so it's my pick.
