I love the album.  But it's not a good gym-workout at all.  (But neither is Automatic for the People by R.E.M. ). 

SOE is best listened to with a bottle of wine on the porch of a beach house during the off season.

Agreed. Its a moody, (ambient in places) album that needs its own, unique way of listening (compared to other U2 albums).

During the build up - it was described as a series of personal letters from Bono regarding life, his mortality, love and his children.

NAIL ON THE HEAD THERE.

Luckily, not much USA bashing either.

And boy can it get DARK - 13 (There Is A Light)!!!

I found SOI to be a great gym album. And I've seen it in a few cooking videos too

Fully agree!! I tried to start running last summer, and I had many power and endurance with listening to Elevation Slane castle
